It's simple enough to do a last name search on the online database and fill out paperwork with the proper government agencies---in time, you may find your self a little-bit or a lot richer.

Illinois Cash Dash Unclaimed Property Auction
The Illinois Treasurer is holding a "Cash Dash" online auction of unclaimed property. This bit of news was picked up by local news stations including WGN.
Banks turn over unclaimed assets in things like Safe Deposit boxes to the state. After several years, the state can sell these items. Fortunately, the owner (or their heirs) can still file a claim and get the money that the goods sold for.
I've checked out some of the items that are for sale---and it looks like they are getting some good prices. For example a 1 ounce bar of silver was selling for over $70---That's more than twice the spot-rate of silver on the open market.
